Ne va di mezzo un gruppo di archeologi britannici. 4 in ordine cronologico dei film ispirati al personaggio di Rohmer, il primo prodotto dalla MGM e l'unico interpretato da Karloff, è considerato il migliore per il ritmo serrato,
l'ingegnosa mistura di horror e ironia, la valentia degli interpreti tra cui Mirna Loy con gli occhi a mandorla, ottima figlia crudele del protagonista. Iniziato da C.Vidor, continuato (e firmato) da C.Brabin.
